RISK

Today is a monumentous day!... As a freshman in college I remember coming out of class one sunny day when a very gentle voice whispered into my ear, “Are you interested in signing up for a free credit card from Citibank? Today only we’re offering a special gift with it” (As if SHE was the gift to take home). Young, impressionable R.J. turned around and saw a young, vibrant, voluptuous blonde who could have just as easily said “Would you be interested in a lifetime of debt and mental anguish from poor investments with money you don’t have?” and I still would have replied with glee “Sure!” Well, that was also a very monumentous day for R.J., as it was 13 years ago to date and what started at a credit limit of 3 digits, quickly morphed into a 5 digit limit with late fees, over limit fees and past due bills. It was a futile battle that I had just about given up on, and although many “charges” were for college expenses (does beer and bourbon count as expenses?), legitimate graduate school tuition and expenses in Miami (hey, I had to wear $300. designer jeans in Miami, how else would I ever have gotten offered that modeling gig that ended up paying me 50 bucks?), medical school expenses and so on. But today, for the first day in 13 years, I have paid off ALL of my credit card debt. All 3 cards I own are paid off entirely (actually overpaid with a slightly negative balance) and my money is now automatically being put into Savings without me even doing a thing. I know my friend Jan and sister Kelly will be proud to read these words. Now granted, RJ is a spender and believes that money burns a whole in your pocket – that you may as well spend it while you’re alive and enjoy it – but I promise, from this day forward, after I return home to Hawaii and buy a new SUV and jet ski to tow on the back of it, I’ll save every penny!

This past week was very boring, and it was really a challenge to stay motivated and energetic. I worked out, did some paperwork, watched a movie and I saw some patients – even performed minor surgery and took a Hemangioma off of someone’s head, but nothing seemed to get me energized. I’m not sure why. I guess its ok to have very dull, lackluster weeks like that. The highlight of the week occurred last night when I hijacked a board game that I used to play often as a child and played it with my corpsman…RISK, The Game of Global Domination! It was actually very fun and good to do something different like that. That’s one of the hardest things about this place I think, working every day and not having any time off. Even with the time off we do have, there’s really no place to go to get peace and quiet. There’s always jets and helicopters flying overhead, or some announcement coming over the base PA system. You’re always surrounded by other people too, and while I consider myself an extrovert, sometimes, as even the happiest of married couples will attest, it’s nice to just be alone, without anyone around you.

Today in the mail I got sent a care package from Soldier's Angel Cindy in San Pedro, CA. It was a little Irish bear. I know my mom will love it as much as I do (she's still trying to figure out how to post a comment to this blog - I love ya mom!) Thanks Cindy, you put a smile on my face today.

Well, that's it for now. There is nothing insightful or entertaining for me to write this time. Maybe you all can help me figure out what kind of SUV to buy when I get back to Hawai'i,...any recomendations???

Oh boy...as you read this, keep in mind: YOU ASKED!!
Don't buy an SUV; they are gas guzzlers that give the oil companies the power to deplete the Earth's resources. Grant, you deserve something really great...just think long and hard before you sign on that dotted line. OK, I'll get off my soapbox now. *grin*

CONGRATULATIONS on paying off your debt. I know all too well how hard that is to accomplish. It took me FIVE years of not going out to dinner with friends, not going to the movies, not doing anything! Ah, but now? Now I pay cash for whatever I do and smirk when my friends pull out their credit cards because I won't be getting a bill next month!!!

Keep up the good work, RJ. It's alright not to be constantly motivated. We all have our ups and downs. Remember that everytime you post on this blog, you make all of us motivated!!

I got divorced to get rid of "my" debts, because they were his, not mine... yippie! lol (;

I've got a used Chevy Tracker, still TECHNICALLY an SUV, lol, & much better on gas than the average. But, I have to agree with Connie, don't get one. By & large, the gas you're gonna put on that credit card to power it will probably put you in debt again (to put a different spin on Connie's post). Stay safe out there, don't work TOO hard, and hope your lackluster week is over, & the next week gives you more fun, in spite of where you are...
Blessed Be,
Melissa B.

RJ... Congrats on paying off your credit card debt... What an awesome feeling!

I have to admit that I skipped to your post bypassing the pictures because the first one didn't seem to load right away... but after seeing my name and reading that you received the Irish Bear, I scrolled back up to the beginning of your post... and there you are with my bear! I have to admit... tears came to my eyes. By the way, you made me smile too.

Take care RJ... Cindy in San Pedro, CA (I seem to have forgotten my password on here. lol)

Well, I think everyone already said it re: your credit cards. Congrats! Would you now consider making a donation to my student loan bill? :-) JK!! Sort of...

Anyway, I don't like SUV's as Connie has stated, but if you MUST get something like that then how about something on the small size but with a lot of power? I know you can find one out there. Do some energy-efficient SUV-hybrid searching. And honestly, you may still want to consider a car...there are enough powerful engines out there for towing. Those are my two cents.

I think I remember playing RISK with you once and then I gave up prematurely since you were being...like you are when you play monopoly. But I think we should play Scategories when you get back!!!! :-)

Um, sorry. That last comment had a lot of typos. I didn't 'preview' it. That being said, I think you got the gist of my comment. :-)

Love ya,
Jan

Ohhhhhhhhhhh, 16 days left!!

Being free is Credit card debt is great feeling... Now that you are saving and not spending I think I can so see your restaurant forming in the near future... I think that it would be a great adventure and I know that you will have many customers myself included stopping in for some great food, beer and wine...

As for the new SUV...I understand wanting a new one but you will have to really shop around for the non gas guzzling SUVs... Is that really possible to find? I have to agree that you can find a strong car and put a hitch on to pull that new Jet Ski. So think that is the best bet. Besides what you won’t spend on gas for the SUV will get your restaurant faster. :P

Ok so I don't check my posts for typos either... :P

Well CONGRATULATIONS on paying off your debt, I wish that happened to me!!! Anyway, I am going to have to agree with connie that SUV's are a bad choice and bad for the environment. Well, I just got back from the big island a few days ago, I went there for my b-day, 24 now, and Camilo and I dove with huge manta rays and hiked up to the top of Mauna Kea where...... he proposed to me!!! I am now engaged how about that for excitement. Anyway I am still trying to coincide with my parents as to the year of the wedding whether it will be june 08 or 09. Well cheer up and make the best of what you got...after all everything now is just money in your pocket.

RJ Congrats on getting the debts paid off. I have learned a valuable lesson and pretty much have most of my debts paid off. Still owe on Student Loans but as soon as I am done with nursing school I am sure I will have them knock out in no time.

I agree with Connie about the SUV it better to purchase a vehicle that gets higher gas milaege especially when gas prices are above $3.00 p/gal.

Glad that I found your blog.

Congrats on paying off your debts. I agree with Connie too about the SUV. I am going thru that process too and got most of them down. Now just dealing with the college loans. Hopefully when I finish nursing school I'll be able to tackle those.
