Gay Marriage Protest Footage May 26, 2009

This is a video clip I made of my experience on May 26, 2009 when I protested for Gay Marriage Rights in West Hollywood, CA. That day in the state of California the decision was made to oppose gay marriage. It was the first time I protested for anything and the entire experience was very moving. The video reflects some of the more captivating moments that evening.

I wondered if you were there. Every time I saw the footage on tv I scanned the crowd wondering if I would see your face. I've protested abortion in the past. It's the only thing I've ever protested. It was quite an experience. I even have a t-shirt that reads in huge lettering on the back, "I didn't kill my baby even though the Supreme Court gave me permission to." It almost always brought comments when I wore it in public. I'm not one to protest publicly like that. I've seen what the cops can do to the protesters. I prefer not to be in a situation like that.

Hmm, RJ on a motorcycle? That sounds like a call to action for this Mighty Mouse prayer warrior. I'm gonna have to be praying triple time for you thinking about you riding around on a motorcycle. I don't think I told you this before. I come from a biker background. (You might have been able to guess from those pics I sent you when you were in Iraq.) I love to ride! And I really miss it sometimes. :) Although I highly doubt I will ride with 1%'s again I would love to ride again one day. It's been a long time. Even now my heart still skips a beat or two when I hear a Harley. Don't think I ever rode a Ducati although I have ridden a BMW. Yeah, definately gonna need to be praying for you. (huge smiles) If you do get one you be careful, ya hear? Ride safe.

I totally hear ya about the night at that "bar". I'd vomit too if I was in a situation like that. No offense taken. :)

Well, I've been yabbering on long enough, don't you think? I've missed you and I'm really glad to see you again. :) Oh yeah, I had sent you a couple emails over the past few months. I was hoping you wouldn't mind since they were so few and far between. Feel free to email me anytime if you want. I always looked forward to hearing from you. Take care, RJ.

Dear R.J.,
Enjoyed your recent blog update regarding "The Gay Marriage March". It really is a shame that California doesn't agree but as I would say "screw them" and go to another state that accepts it!!! And what is this that I read about you riding a motorcycle!!! Guess I'll be getting more gray hairs and have to go to Rena more often to get my hair colored!!! Just be careful. You know that I'm always behind you and Kelly 100% in whatever you7 do!!! Love, Mom

Sitting back here in the midwest (WI), I often forget about how many other people out there actually are doing things like the rallys and demonstrations. It just gets my blood boiling to sit and think that just becasue we are all a little different, we have to be excluded.

I am going to shamelessly plug my blog and an letter to the editor I wrote a while back. They changed the last part of my letter to "protect me"...but it gets the point across. It is the third one down http://rvjinwi.blogspot.com/

Even though Wisconsin has a consitutional amendment defining marriage as one man and one woman, they have moved in the right direction this week and have allowed for domestic partnerships to begin to be recognized.

In fewer years than you might guess, we are going to sit back and ask ourselves what the big deal was and how stupid things were when gay couples "couldn't marry".
