Alright, let's see where to begin... The first photo was taken from the week before X-mas when my friend Kelli Bullock had a "Deck the Balls" party where everyone had to decorate a X-mas ball and then we competed for the top ball. I won first place with my 'Mele Ball' (get it? MELE Kalikimaka). Anyway, the holidays were a big blur. Planes, trains and automobiles, but I ended up seeing just about everyone that I wanted to and having a damn good time doing it (a little too much at times).
Photo number 2 is of Jan and I the day after X-mas. Kelly (sister), Mike (brother-in law), Jan, Anthony (her squeeze) and I went to a local brewery in PA and had a blast catching up. I have to say - spending time with Jan again was one of the highlights of my vacation. As much as I love Hawaii, I wish I were closer to her. BUT perhaps late in the year 08 will bring a visit from her and Anthony...
I enclosed a picture of me in my dress blues. I made my mom very happy by wearing them to Christmas Eve Mass. I felt very proud wearing them, and it was nice to have people come up to me and express their gratitude for just doing my job. (On a side note - my Group Surgeon heard about all of my 'supposed' accomplishments during the deployment and he informed me that I was nominated for the Flight Surgeon of the Year Award. This award distinguishes one Flight Surgeon around the globe for his or her accomplishments. The winners haven't been selected yet, but it has been an honor just to be nominated.)
The next picture is of my family and I in PA during the holiday. My X-mas present to my mom was a new computer and high speed internet (which she figured out before Christmas despite my careful attempts at keeping it a secret from her). My mother is an extremely clever woman - believe me when I say that NOTHING gets past her! So anyway, my mom should post a reply to this blog for the first time ever after I submit this entry. We'll see if she can remember what I taught her!
Next, my niece Kiera and I the morning of her Christmas pagaent! She was a star and it was another highlight of my vacation. I spent four days with my sister and her family in Virginia. It was relaxing and just what I needed before going home and seeing all of my friends up in the Northeast (or as I called it - the Arctic...it was bite ass cold - but they said it was mild for that time of the year. It's all perspective I guess.)
Finally, New Years! I spent it with my friends at Billy's house. Pictured in the final photo are friends Rocco, Me, Billy, Jacintha and her boyfriend Eneko. It was a great New Years and I couldn't have thought of a better way to ring in the New Year than with my friends.
So here I am, January 8th, settled into my new apartment, new furniture, new life, fresh start. I'm happy, but there are times that I miss the simplicity of Iraq. Does that sound strange? I mean, every decision there was pretty much made for me and I didn't have to worry about the stupid things that cause stress in life. It's a rediculously complicated world we live in. This past weekend I got stressed because: my high definition cable box crapped out, my high definition channels had a slight voice delay which drove me crazy, my garbage disposal got clogged because a random screw fell in it, my newly washed car (whose name is Angelina by the way) got caught in a rainstorm and got dirtied up, I accidentally put '87 octane gas instead of '91 into it, a few ants crept into my apartment and my flawless place is being invaded, I broke one of my Riedel crystal wine glasses, my high speed internet went down for an entire day, my dishwasher left spots on my glasses which caused me to be behind by 10 minutes on my dinner party because I had to hand clean my glasses, one of my magazines arrived bent because it was stuffed the wrong way into the mailbox, my brand new I-phone crashed and I had to return it for a new one, my I-tunes music won't burn properly onto a CD, my dryer takes 3 cycles before it dries my towels and my remote controls, all 5 of them, have a mind of their own. When did this happen? Just 3 months ago, I was content when the AFN Military Television Network broadcasted a show, snowy and skipping every 3 seconds and barely coming in. I was content and grateful, and all of a sudden, life is trying its hardest to make me forget about the important things. My health, the health of my friends and family, the fact that a war is still going on overseas. So tomorrow if my automatic coffee maker is late in finishing its morning cycle, I WILL laugh and not stress. One of my New Years Resolutions is to be more grateful, enjoy life and not get so stressed by everything, being ever mindful of those things which are most important in my life.
I wish you all the best of New Years! It has been a challenge for me to keep in touch with all of my Angels, let alone my friends. Let me just send you these greetings - May 2008 bring you health, wealth and peace of mind! I love and appreciate all of you, every day - my friends, my family, my pen pals, Jan, Victor, Barabara, my family, my sister, Mike, Kiera, Ryan, my Soldiers Angels. God Bless you all!

As Thoreau said, "Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity..." Travelling, living and working in developing countries gives us a greater appreciation for all we have, and all we don't need to be truly happy. You have seen and experienced both sides. And you have the best - love of family and friends, good health, and a phenomenal attitude of joy.
Well done on the nomination - deserved for all you did for the Uglies during your deployment.
As for all the nigly bothers of daily life, does it make you miss orange Jello days??? :)
Still looking forward to our virtual vodka tasting!
Your San Francisco angel.
WOW! You DID have a busy holiday season! (: I'm just happy for you that it was filled with so many "warm fuzzies" from your family & friends. Glad to see you haven't lost that grateful spirit; good New Year's resolution, I think we should all be on that same page in a rich & blessed country like the USA. Looking forward to your mom's posting, you looked great in your dress blues, here's hoping for that visit from Jan for you, and THANK YOU for including us Soldiers Angels in your wishes. You really ARE an amazingly grateful person, I really admire that. Let us know if you got that award, that's really cool!!! (;
Blessed Be,
Melissa
RJ, it was a blast being with you over the holidays more than once this year. :-) I was very happy to be with you, and I do wish we would had a little more time for 'Jan & RJ' talk, but I knew you had to make your rounds in the Northeast...for sure. :-)
I love you. Don't take those things to heart so much. I have no doubt your transition will get easier. But I also think in some ways...that simplicity is something you have learned for the first time. Maybe? :-)
Congrats on the nomination. Now that life is a little more humdrum...let's make sure we stay in touch.
Oh, and the Absolute Pears was awesome! Thanks!
Love ya,
JC
Hi RJ!
Glad to finally hear about your trip back here to PA. I warned you it was cold!
Thanks for sharing the pictures. The kids are as cute as ever!
Congratulations on your nomination. You certainly deserve it.
I think we all try to keep life as simple as possible. Just remember that friends and family (especially the little ones) are the greatest blessings.
Have a Happy 2008! I hope you are able to keep up your blog so we can hear all the happenings of your life. Can't wait to see your mom's posting.
Take care of yourself.
Love,
Missy
RJ! First of all congratulations on the nomination. Well deserved! I couldn't help but giggle at all the crappy things going wrong...welcome to my world, LOL! It is so easy to get wrapped up in the stupid little inconviencences that get thrown our way, isn't it? I have to keep reminding myself that those things are not important; my troops are. I'm so glad you posted an update. I was craving my RJ fix, lol.
RJ,
Happy New Year!! Sounds like things are going well, normal really:) I'm sure you will get adjusted now that the holidays are over and you life will be getting on a routine again. Sounds kinda boring when you say it like that, huh? Anywho, good luck and congrats on the nomination.
Take care,
Debby
Congrats on the nomination! I'm sure you have the award in the bag!
It was great to have you visit us for 4 days over the holidays, and to spend Christmas with you. Hopefully Mike and I can come to see you in the next few months...
Hey Handsome, Oh Wait I mean My DOC!
Just so you know I don’t always do what I’m told! :P you asked me to post so I will. I can never say no to my Doc! Congrats on the Nomination for F.S.o.t.Y.A!!! I told you over voice but reading it is good too…
Hmmmm what to say that will be off the wall and nothing you would ever expect. I have to live up to my rep. :P You know Deck the Balls could be taken many different ways... and since you have a slight insight to my perverted mind. I think you know what I’m thinking!
I love all your new photos. My two favorites are of the Family and Dress Blues! Hey your mom collects Longaberger Baskets too!! We have those same baskets here.
If I were there Angelina would have been hand washed to get her all clean again. As for remotes with minds of their own, I think they are just responding to their owner. Now, towels don’t you know you can’t dry more than 5 in a load at a time??? Not when you buy the good heavy duty thick ones! OMG you can’t throw a dinner party with spotty glasses! I had the same problem New Years Eve! I did a party here Steaks, shrimp and lobster on the grill. MMM it was good! LOL I bought a new coffee pot with timer etc… It totally has a mind of its own. Can we say makes coffee @ 2:45am, not at the 6am its set for. Oh wait I don’t do coffee, so the timer shouldn’t be set! But It IS!! I can turn it off but it always comes back on!
By the way it was great to hear your voice. One day we will find more time to really talk. Between the hospital and the law office we don’t have too much time. Keep me posted on the Marine from today too.
I better go I’m getting long winded and taking up a lot of space here. Hot damn it's a mini book comment! (Cheesy Grin)
I wish you the best this New Year has to bring. Stay healthy, take it slow, count your blessings, find love, be happy and stay strong.
With So much ANGEL LOVE
Hugs, Kisses & Wedgies too,
Susan, Christopher & Justina
p.s. they send you hugs and kisses back to you! I was too excited I had to wake them up to tell them I talked to you.
Happy New Year sweetie to you and yours!!
What great news about the nomination. All of us that know you should 'maybe' have been surprised, but.....NOT! What a wonderful thing to be recognised for all that you did. Your family is as proud as can be, I am sure.
Have a blessed 2008!
I wish we could have connected in Kaneohe. Your Marines had nothing but praises to say about you and you are truly respected and beloved by many!
Love and Semper Fi!

Hey, RJ! :)
I'm sorry it has taken me so long to post a comment. Sounds like you had some wonderful times over the holidays. The "Deck the Balls" party sounds like alot of fun. And yours won! :) Was there ever any doubt? Because YOU'RE a winner! You're awesome and you will succeed no matter what you do in life.
I'm so glad you were able to spend the time with your family. I thought about you alot over the holidays. Family is so important.
RJ, I have never seen a more handsome man in dress blues. I am very proud of you. You already know how much I believe you deserve. I'm very excited about your nomination and you know I will be praying for you about that.
Yeah, I guess the weather was mild. It felt so cold to you because you have been living in the desert all summer! :) Remember the 130-140 degrees? I sure am glad to have you home now.
Ok, so as far as the "simplicity of Iraq"... my answer to that requires snail mail.
I know you've been very busy and I haven't heard from you much. I miss you. I'm looking forward to hearing from you again.
Love you...

Hi R.J.,
Enjoyed your recent blog entry and you thought that I couldn't leave a comment!!! Fooled you!!!
Love, Mom
Way to go, Ms.Matyas! You show him a thing or two! (hey, you changed his diapers, so that gives you rights to go "nah-nah" & razz your son all you want... Besides, like RJ said, NOTHING gets past you, does it?:) Good to see you here, thanks for giving the world such a fantastic Flight Surgeon (and a cool person, as well). I agree, he'd better get that award, or we need a recount!
Blessings to you & your family,
Melissa B.
Angelina!? - I love it!! That was our 'girl' baby name... except, I had a 'Joey', instead!
Maybe next time!
Congrats on your nomination... I don't know anyone who would deserve it more!
Is that the view from your apartment??? Spectacular!
Take care!
Lisa D.
