The Roomate, The Neighbor, The Partner and Angelina's Cold

Aloha everyone! Well, I'm happy to report that my life has slowed down some since the holidays. In fact, I've actually taken time to do things like go to the beach, go to the movies (saw that King Kong-ish movie Cloverfield and loved it, despite its mixed reviews), host a few dinner parties (last night I had a great 'pau hana pupus and cocktails' get together) and even had time to dip into my cook books that I got for Christmas. I resolved that every month I'm going to select a different cuisine (Thai, Asian, Italian, Indian, etc.) and learn a bunch of dishes from that style (via cookbooks or Food Network). What a great way for me to practice my cooking and do something I really enjoy, in addition to hosting dinner parties where my friends can sample the cuisine, without having to go to culinary school - which is just not a possibility right now. Last night I made Chicken Curry Satay with Spicy Thai Peanut Sauce (Thai is the featured cuisine this month) and my Green Curry with Chicken and Basil is fantastic I have to say! So outside of that, I was entertaining the idea of having a roomate back in November and since then one of my friends that I've met since my return told me he needed a place to stay and since he's a great guy (and cooks), we seem to have a lot in common and he can pay me what I'm looking for, he's going to move in Feb 1st! Part of me doesn't want to give up my freedom, but I think the greater part realizes that there is an opportunity here to make a great friend, save a ton of money (which I have been blowing like its my job since I returned from Iraq) and live with someone who cooks like me. So his name is Tim and I'll keep you posted if it turns out to be a complete disaster or an amazing experience. I'm confident in the latter. So get this - last week I had a few people over for cocktails on a Saturday night and we were playing music and chatting. Mind you, it was late (about midnight or so), but the volume wasn't exceptionally loud. Anyway, I get a ring at my doorbell, and my neighbor, this crusty 70ish year old drunk, starts pointing his finger in my face and yelling, "If you don't keep the noise down I'm going to call the cops!! There's no reason for you to be making this much racket at 1 am!" Can you believe that this was our first meeting? So I was thinking to myself, "Oh hell no!" (Mind you I had a few cocktails). So I raised a finger in the air and said, "First of all...I do NOT appreciate being yelled at in your tone. SECOND, if you ask me politely like a normal human being, I would be more than happy to turn the music down and ask my guests to keep quiet, BUT I DO NOT respond well to people yelling in my face!" So he turned around and shut the door. Well, as it turns out, he e-mails one of the building managers about me without my knowledge. So last week I was leaving for work one sunny Waikiki morning, when as I'm waiting for the elevator, his door opens... Out comes this adorable little Asian woman of about 50 years. She greets me with a "Hello, Good Morning!" and a smile. I struck up a chat with her and discovered that she owns the apartment, and he husband passed away last year and the old crusty guy was one of her husband's friends who helped with the funeral. Since then he hasn't left and she gave me the distinct impression that she felt it was long overdue for him to say Adieu. So as the elevator reaches the bottom, the doors open and this 72 year old Scottish guy says with a heavy accent to me "Don't I know you?" I replied "I don't think so." Then he turns to the Asian woman and says "Hey - did you ever get that situation straightened out with the noisy neighbor of yours?" I was like "I'm the neighbor!" lol. He replied "You're in trouble." But I followed up by stating that the man she was living with was downright rude, yelling at me, and he handled the situation very poorly. The Scott then said "I think he drinks a lot. Don't take it personally." (One of the Four Agreements if you've read that book). So I gave the Asian woman my phone number and said that if she ever has a problem in the future, please call me and I'd be happy to do what I can to resolve it. Just then the Scott asked me what I do for a living (he saw me in uniform with a stethoscope in hand). When I told him I was a Doctor and that I liked Star Trek (it just kind of came up - don't ask me how), I became his new best friend. So bottom line is - my drunken neighbor can (as my Grandmother would say) - pound sand up his ass for all I care! Angelina has a cold! In case you don't know, Angelina is the name I gave my beautiful car, the Acura TL Type S. She's been coughing and running at less than peak efficiency because I accidentally put low Octane Gasoline in her last week instead of Premium (91) as I was instructed. So she's a little sick. Sorry Angelina. First Do No Harm is my motto and I got her sick, but she's almost cleared the infection and I'll soon fill her empty tank up with a full tank of the good stuff. And finally, as for my relationship issues. Well, I'll sum it up Horoscope Style, how about that: Ok, Dear Sagitarius, you've realized that you still care very very much for your ex, but is it too soon to forgive and forget? Heed the advice of your friends and proceed with extreme caution - don't forget you've been in this honeymoon phase before. Are things truly different this time? Be smart, take it slow. Its okay to enjoy the wonderful feelings you're having, just don't fall head over heels - keep both feet on the ground! (That about sums it up) That's it for now gang. I can't believe my mom actually posted a comment - after all this time! You never cease to amaze me mom!!! HERE IS A GUIDE TO THE PHOTOS: Friends Billy and Jacintha followed by shots of my hike up to Diamond Head last weekend!

Love the VIEWS in your photos!! We have had highs of 12 with lows of -16 with wind chill its -30ish! Oh yes can’t forget the 12” of snow in 2 days. We are also having major winter flooding. Our river has been cresting at 15 + feet above normal. 40 houses had to be evacuated last weekend. We have never had winter flooding like this before, at least not on record. The river is sick and suffering from major ice jamming. The 2 parks that are 4 blocks from my house have been closed the past week due to the flooding. So far my house is safe from the mess.

What’s for dinner? Sure would love to enjoy some fine cuisine that I don’t have to cook. ;P This past weekend was spent baking cakes! Sunday was the kick off for Catholic Schools Week. Staff members were instructed to bring in a cake for the cake raffle. Well, we all know that this momma don’t do the store bought cakes. I did a trip to my local supply house and found some new cool cake pans. I baked and decorated a cool party hat and a red ribbon in honor of Christopher’s teacher that passed away over Christmas. Mrs. Perrone was the schools Red Ribbon coordinator. It was decided that this years Catholic Schools week would be celebrated in her honor.

I’m very sorry to hear about Angelina. You have to watch those allergies and it sounds like she is on the mend.

I must laugh at your drunken Scott. I have had my fair share of drunken neighbors knocking on my door in the middle of the night to complain too, even when I didn’t have music on or company over.

As for the ex: Take it slow Love! Remember they were an ex for a reason. One must do some real soul searching when it comes to getting back with an ex. Brother you are preaching to the choir this one. I think we have all done it. I know I have and for me it was a mistake that almost cost me my life as well as my son’s. Just proceed with caution and take it slow. No matter what your decision your family and friends are here to support you! I got your back!

Gotta love roommates! Especially ones that can cook! I wish you the best of luck there! I need to run the Law office is calling to me saying “you have depositions to prepare for!” I love this field of work! Take care of you. I will call soon.

Angel Love & Hugs My Friend!

Dear R.J.,   Thank you for the pictures, letter and article.  Glad to hear that you're using the cookbooks.  I just bought myself a new Joyce Chen wok since I wore the other on out.  I'm into Japanese cooking right now!!!  I just purchased another cookbook at Barnes & Noble which you might want to check out especially since it has quite a few shrimp receipes in it, I know how much you love shrimp!!!  The book is "The Shun Lee Cookibook".  Sorry to hear about Angelina but once you fill her up with the gas she should recover!!!  I liked the comment you mentioned regarding, that was one of her favorites along with many others!!!  We just have to remember not to pass on any of these "expression" as Kiera puts it to her.  Take care, talk to you soon!!!  Love, Mom

Any Doc that is recognised as "Flight Doc of the Year", will certainly get Agelina on the mend and in peak form.

If you ever think you have cooked for more people than you anticipated, I know of a few Marines who would be happy to keep you from placing leftovers in the frig, LOL!

I happened to be in Easton yesterday, and I was thinking of you and your mom. Wished I had an addy or phone number. I did manage to find Wegmans, as everyone at work is constantly talking about how great they are, but they live in Jersey, and there isn't one near me. I was in supermarket heaven!!! Mostly foodies and cooks appreciate that statement. Made the day worthwhile, since the rest of it was watching my daughters volleyball team get "spanked" at the tournament at Liberty HS. Three team members down and three kids fighting off the flu, they were definitely in a funk and playing handicapped. Oh well, I did go home with some good stuff, and Julie didn't go home humgry.

Hugs sent your way!

Hi RJ!

Okay, love the pictures of sunny Hawaii especially since I slid my way into work this morning on a sheet of ice. How jealous am I? Sounds like you may not need culinary school at the rate you're going. I haven't baked or cooked anything recently with the selling of the house and trying to find a new one in my price range. Stress reigns at this point! Good luck with Angelina, your lovely neighbor, and the roommate. All will end up well. Proceed with caution with the ex, trust me, I know the feeling(s). Take care of yourself and keep cooking!

Love,
Missy

Aloha to you, RJ! :) I'm so glad you are taking the time to stop and smell the roses. I envy you the beach, ya know. Still snowing here. Ah well, great things are worth waiting for. I have quite the cookbook collection myself. Not enough shelf space in my current kitchen to store them all. Can't wait til I move. A gourmet kitchen is at the top of my list. One of the cuisines I learned a few years ago is Pakistani. Love it!! Built my own cookbook of fave recipes. I love the techniques. I have a couple co-workers who love it and request it now and then. My personal fave is Chicken Tikka. Served with Tahari. Or Biryani. And a nice Mango Lassi. Palak Paneer. Hmmm, I could go on and on. Dude, now look what you've done! LOL Now I'm gonna have to go cook! :) I hope the roommate thing works out for you. I know what you mean about your freedom. I have been living on my own for like seven years. I can relate to the neighbor thing too. In my case it's my neighbors who are loud and wake me up at like three in the morning when I have to get up at five thirty for work. I'm praying for your car. She'll be fine again in no time. :) I'm praying about your relationship issues. Follow your heart. Hi, Mom! :) We've heard so much about you it's nice to finally meet you. :) Love the pics, RJ! :) The view is fabulous!

Take care of yourself. b
